Eating And Drinking When Cycling
A vehicle is only as good as the engine, which in the case of a bike means you! Using the correct fuel will enable you to cycle faster for longer, prevent any aches the next day, and reduce the risk of cramp.
Science In Sport
We stock nearly the whole range of Science In Sport products in all sizes and flavours. Our reasons for choosing SIS are:
- they taste good!
- race proven system for cyclists and triathletes, including Bradley Wiggins winning three Olympic medals
- based on maltodextrin, a slow release carbohydrate so no energy spikes and crashes
- no caffeine or dodgy chemicals, complies with UCI and Olympic rules on banned substances
For more information visit the SIS website and download their cycling guide (PDF). Bigfoot staff are happy to help with most enquiries, and for specific information contact SIS via their website as they are a very helpful UK based company.
SIS Offers
SIS provide a trial pack at a reduced price to allow you to try the range of products and flavours, and a free water bottle is included which has a mixing guide for the powders. We also stock individual sachets of the complete range of drinks so you can sample all the flavours. To save money when buying the drinks, 500g, 1.6kg and 2.7kg tubs are available which greatly reduce the cost when you find a product you like. For bars and gels we have some special offers:
Save 10% on 10 bars or gels
Save 20% on a box of 24 bars or 30 gels (mixed flavours).
Before Cycling
Blood sugar levels are restored from the body's glycogen reserve which is made from carbohydrates. To keep glycogen levels high carb load the night before with a meal based on something starchy like pasta or rice. Porridge makes an excellent breakfast as the oats provide slow release carbs. As an alternative SIS make PSP22 which is a carbohydrate solution that can be drunk at any time to top up energy levels. Drinking extra water in the 2 hours before a ride can help to maintain hydration levels.
During A Ride
On a hot day a lot of electrolytes (salts) are lost through perspiration, and this can reduce performance and is one of the factors that causes cramp. To combat this SIS make their GO drink which contains a mix of electrolytes and carbohydrates. GO is also available in gel form, which is handy to give a boost towards the end of a ride. Because of the electrolytes GO drinks should not be made too concentrated, so PSP or energy bars are useful on longer rides to top up carbohydrate levels.
Drinking enough water is essential, and if you wait until you feel thirsty it's too late. Up to a litre of fluid is required every hour in hot weather, so always take 2 large water bottles or a hydration pack on long rides.
After A Ride
This is the bit that most riders forget about, and it is the leading cause of aches and pains the next day! A lot of cyclists eat and drink properly before and during a ride, then afterwards just put their feet up. Exercise damages muscles, which then recover and get stronger after training. However, to do this they need protein and they need it fast. SIS have created Rego, a drink containing protein, vitamins and a little carbohydrate, which should be taken within 30 minutes of the end of the ride. Try it and feel the difference for yourself the next day.
Fluids are important, but avoid alcohol. Fatty foods are also a bad idea as they reduce absorption of other nutrients, so try and leave the pie and chips washed down with a beer in the pub until a couple of hours after the ride.
Train While You Sleep!
Rego Nocte is the latest product from Science In Sport and contains slow release proteins and minerals that are used by the body while sleeping. Nocte also promotes sleep so you get a good night's rest and ride better the next day. Available in store now in both chocolate and vanilla flavours. Visit sleepstrong.com for more information.
